Greatest chilean
Today I am going to talk about a woman that I think is really important in chile, and her legacy will always be with us.
Her name is Violeta del Carmen Parra Sandoval, she was born in 1917 and died in 1967.
She is one of the most recognized chilean composers of all time. She was a folkloric singer, composer of poems and “décimas” and a popularizer of popular music in Chile. She was an artist in many ways, she was also a sculptor, potter and painter.
At the age of 9 she started to learn guitar and singing, and when she was 12 she wrote her first songs. At 17, she started to sing in different bars and restaurants with her sister Hilda.
In the 50s, encouraged by her brother Nicanor, Violeta began to collect and collate authentic Chilean folk music from all over the country. and I think that was her most important work.
She traveled a lot in her life, she lived many years in Europe where she developed her musical career and where she planned to show Chilean popular music in European countries.
Then she returns to Chile in 1965 and establishes in La Reina a cultural center called “La carpa de la reina”, with a capacity of a thousand people where she wanted to give concerts and show her music, but it did not have much assistance.
If today Violeta was alive, I would ask her what makes her happy, because she did a lot of things, but at the end she commited suicide, and I think that it shows that she was missing something.
